This month I visited Community House Middle School and met with our May students of the month. The first student I had the privilege of meeting is 7th grader, Tyler Roth. Amy Jurusik, Tyler's counselor, nominated him for this prestigious award. She describes him as a student who has good character, is neat and complete with his school work, and is polite and respectful.
I met with Tyler and asked him to what he attributes his academic success. Tyler stated he pays attention in class and writes down what is said. He added that he has never received less than an "A" on his report cards. This is quite an accomplishment! He admits that some tasks are difficult and unpleasant, but he doesn't complain.
As I asked Tyler how he remains focused, I realized this student is definitely looking toward to his future. Most answers given were future based. I asked if he realized this about himself. He shared with me that he often thinks about his life as an adult. He wants to have a happy life and a job that is both satisfying and fulfilling. He also shared some good advice for others- stay in school. It will all be worth it when they get older.
In his spare time, Tyler enjoys playing soccer as center mid and left mid for Charlotte United Futbol Club. He began playing at the age of six and spends at least three nights a week practicing. He also enjoys playing pick up football games in his neighborhood and walking his miniature Schnauzer, Heidi.
Tyler enjoys building things and has visions of becoming an architect one day. As set as Tyler's heart and eyes are on the future, I have no doubt that one day he will create magnificent structures for us all to behold.
Congratulations to our Student of the Month, Tyler Roth!
Our second student of the month is Lauren Reichard. Lauren is described by her counselor as being a positive role model, helpful, and respectful of the rights of others. I asked Lauren about being a role model and she relied, "I enjoy helping in class. When Mr. Koback is out, I always help the substitute teacher and assist any students that may have a problem." She added that the role models in her life are her parents and her sister. She looks up to her sister and says, "I know I can go to her for anything and she will always be there to help."
Lauren is in the National Junior Honor Society and has maintained a GPA of 3.5 for six consecutive quarters! Lauren shares that she does her best and always gives 100%. "There are some subjects that are easier than others, but when you have a great teacher like Mr. Koback, it's not that hard", says Lauren.
As I spoke with Lauren, I noticed she answered with a "yes mam" and "no mam". In today's society, such manners seem to be above and beyond the norm. I asked her about this and she said it's very important to her to have good manners. She makes a point to always say please and thank you and respond to adults with mam or sir.
Lauren is active in community service and has participated in volunteer work for Operation Christmas Child. She became involved with this as a result of attending her best friend's church. She says she enjoyed the experience and hopes to participate again this year.
In her spare time, Lauren enjoys competitive cheerleading, swimming for the Country Club Swim Team, and hanging out with friends. After graduating high school, she hopes to attend Appalachian University and become a photographer or a Lawyer. Whatever Lauren achieves in life, she will be a great example for students to follow.
Congratulations to our Student of the Month, Lauren Reichard!
